Mk 8

Post by John Daniels »

Hi all

New here and new to Davrians.

I've just bought a Mk 8 in white, Q719 WRG. It was a runner until a month ago when the previous owner removed the 998 engine and box and put the car up for sale. I managed to get an 875 Sport engine (minus some ancillaries) and a gearbox in the deal but it needs a number of parts and lots of TLC to get it running properly and be comfortable (almost no interior).

It is MOT'd until September so it gives me some time to get it back on the road.

I very nearly bought a Mk 8 as a brand new kit in 1980 after rolling my Imp, but ended up getting one of the first Mk3 Escorts - not much similarity there. So now I have one only 35 years later.

Photos at a later date.

Hi John,
Good to hear that you've got your Mk8 at last!
Although some Davrians are well finished inside, most are very Spartan..like mine, but I'm sure you know that.Where are you in the country, it would be interesting to find out if you are near any other Davrian owners and it could also help you track down a few of the spares that you are looking for.
Good luck with the rebuild.

Just noticed that you're in east Sussex....have you contacted John Rawlins he's probably quite close to you

Hi John,
Good to hear from another owner, you probably know this already but the username of it's previous owner was ibbo on Davrian.net, I think there's a bit of info about it on here.

Well done buying the mk8, I think you got a cracking deal, although not quite as cheap as they were 35 years ago.

Mines got no interior either, the trouble is every time I go out to the garage to have a look at what I'm going to do to it I end up taking it for a drive instead, and anyway for me at least, I don't think an interior would add much to the driving experience, just weight and moisture absorbing material (my Dav lets a fair amount of water in).

There is an aim to try to sort out a get together this year, I think opinion was that the Basingstoke area some time in the spring/summer might be doable and not too far from you if it happens.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies - haven't been back here since I posted so didn't realise I'd had replies.

I've already registered with John Rawlins and got the member list and there are a few not too far away from me so I'll have to get in touch. John is only 30 miles away.

I do intend to do something with the interior to keep the wife happy at the very least. Corbeau seats are only a mile from me so when it's mobile I'll drop it round there to see if there's something comfortable that'll fit without too much hassle, and may even see if they can drop around to me earlier for a bit of a look-see and sales pitch. May even try and fit some heating/ventilation as suggested elsewhere on here.

Doing pretty well with sourcing parts already with a fair size order of new/recon items from Speedy Spares (only 35 miles away and near one of our offices) and a few bits donated by Imp-owning work colleagues - very generous and always appreciated of course.

You're right about the water leaks - the dash was rather wet at the weekend even with a cover over the car (a borrowed rather well-used one it has to be said). New cover purchased and so far has kept out the rain since.

Love to attend a get together if at all possible - can't promise the car will be on the road by then but I certainly will try. I have a couple of weeks off at Easter and will try to use it on the car as much as possible.
