Tyre sizes?

Post by aaron aardvark »

Thanks to the MSA and the EU , the tyres that I run in roadgoing classes in hillclimbs and sprints have been banned for 2016.. The problem is now that there is very limited choice of a list 1b tyre in 13" sizes. The smallest available to me is a 185/60-13 . I'm currently on 175/50-13
Other than raising the gearing higher than I would like,I wonder if it will adversely affect the steering. Does anyone have experience of this size tyre on the front of a Davrian. Any thoughts? What are others using?
Otherwise I could use a list 1a tyre...but that would spell the end of sub 40 second runs at Shelsley. . :( ...

I've driven a Davrian on 185/60r13's and it was fine.

Thanks for that.... at least there's plenty of choice in a 185 size, so might try some..
A bit more research today and I've discovered Nankang do a 1b tyre in a 175 50 size.
Don't know what they're like. Anyone tried them?
And if anyone wants a set of Yokohama A048r , I will probably be selling my nearly new set...

I think you can probably get away with several variations without any worries.
On 13", I've used 185/60, 175/55, and now running 225/45.
The overall diameters are all fairly similar, so I've had no issues with all 3.

The 225 are Toyo R888, but these were bought back in 2012, so I don't know if they are on the 2016 "allowed" tyre list.

The Toyo r888 is still on the list and is considered to be the stickiest on the list. Trouble is, it is only available from a 185/60 upwards. ..hence the question. .. I would buy a set if I could be sure the steering and gearing would be OK.
In a bit of a dilemma now... 175/50 nankang or 185/60 toyo.... I definitely can't afford both!

I have been running A048Rs (205-60-13) as road-going Davrian running in the modified production class (so still usable) for many years now with no problem. I did discuss the issue of tyres on the Yokohama stand at the Autosport Show and I seem to remember that they suggested that until they bring out a new tyre, they would recommend a Toyo alternative.

It's really a choice of keeping my Yokohama a048r , buying a hans device and running modified class or sticking to roadgoing classes and buying new tyres... so about £400 either way..Just to carry on as before. . 205 /60-13 seems big to me....I'm on 175/50-13 ..but standard Imp gearbox. .
I think I'm going to buy some tyres and hopefully flog the old (actually nearly new ) ones to someone with a Mini..
