Steering column?

Does everyone else have their Davrian steering column between the brake and the clutch? Is there any other option to route it a bit more north so driving is a bit more comfortable?

Cheers
Dave

Sorry for the poor pic, at least you can see the detail.

This is the column in Ken Banks Mk7, it has a double joint and the steering wheel is nearly vertical ..??,i know what i mean!.

Well done on keeping the car, totally the correct decision.

Dave.

It does make left foot braking more tricky

Not sure who's this is, but either it's got no steering column, or he's cracked the problem!Neat pedal adjusters, too.

My own's right in the way though I find it a problem just getting in and out, not driving. It definitely needs a UJ.

that is interesting, it does seem to be solved in that picture - assuming the steering column isn't just absent after extensive work fitting those pedal extensions, which is quite likely I guess.

I've bought a pair of UJs with the right splines on to do the job, need to get the gear cutting setup working on my lathe to see if I can machine up something to go in-between them.

cheers
Dave

Keep us posted, if you get it fully sorted, I'd like to do the same on both cars. I used to be able to slip in and out of a Davrian when I was 20 something, but 30 something years later it's surprisingly less easy...

Mind you, I think it's easier than a Lotus Elise S1, with that very high sill.

Very nice....lets see those pix... That looks like the best job so far, the column is invisible!

This could be the definitive column conversion.....I'll nip down the scrappy and look for a decent E-type column....

Seriously, this is such a good idea, I'll do it to both cars asap.

quite an old thread now but I have an update, I'm now waiting for delivery of a pair of UJs and I plan to fit the wheel so it comes from the centre of the dash rather than the bottom. Two bearings will be inside the dash and the first UJ will turn slightly upwards so the column disappears into the dash then turns something like 30 degrees down to face the driver. Hoping to have a near vertical steering wheel which is further off the knees and pedals that have nothing between them. Will post pics.
