Transaxle oil

Post by Dave6091 »

Going to do a service on the Mk4. The transaxle was brand new when i fitted it a couple of years ago, when i got the car it came with two which my friend had bought over twenty years before!. I filled the box with an ep75/80 but have always been slightly unhappy with how thin the oil was and have decided to change it now but what to use i'm not sure.
The oil of choice we used in the 70's was always Shell EP80 which i understood had an additive in it suitable for the bronze bushings in the Imp box, it was also much thicker which i prefer altho' i fully understand that oils have progressed somewhat since then.

Do we have a definative answer?.

Dave.

I have just looked into this and after doing a search on the Imp Club forum used EP80, however it must be a GL4 spec not GL5 as it apparently eats bulk rings

Same issues with series landrovers
Landy specialists stock the right oil.

I would recommend ringing Don Miles at Performance Oils, the UK dealer for Amsoil .

http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/onlinestore.html

Amsoil gear oils are, according to the comparative test results for API, JASO etc ratings in the USA, globally better than anything else you can buy, and have been widely used in F1 in cars sponsored by big name oil companies.

Don's a good person to talk to, he races a mid engined V12 Jaguar in GpC
